History Of International Yoga Day

This day was promoted by current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his speech on 27th September 2014 at the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA), he proposed this idea. The draft resolution was presented by India’s Permanent Representative to the UN. When the UN resolution was adopted, several leaders of the Indian spiritual movement voiced their support. In 2015, RBI issued a ten rupees coin in honor of International Yoga Day. UN Postal Administration (UNPA) issued 10 stamps depicting various Asanas on a single sheet in recognition of the International Day of Yoga in April 2017.

First Observance

The first International Yoga Day was celebrated around the world on 21 June 2015. On that day, 21 asanas were performed for 35 minutes in New Delhi, India, by the PM and his dignitaries.

Theme Of Year 2021

This time, the day is being celebrated virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of Yoga is to promote physical and mental well-being. Yoga is also playing a significant role in the rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients in quarantine. It is particularly helpful in controlling their fears and anxiety. The theme for this year’s International Yoga Day is “Yoga for well-being”. The World Health Organization(WHO) has also asked its member states to practice yoga. WHO has also incorporated it in its Global Action Plan for Physical Activity 2018 – 2030.
