  • The Civil Aviation Ministry has eased and established new drone rules.
  • The Quantum of Fee has been reduced and is not related to the size of the drone.
  • Digital Sky to be developed into a user-friendly system of single-window.

The central government has established new drone rules for 2021. And the good news is, they are much more liberalized than the previous rules. Previously many approvals were required but with the new drone rules, they’ve all been abolished. It is expected that operations of the drone will be simpler for the civil drone operators.

The New Rules

The number of forms to be filled has been reduced from twenty-five to five. The total number of fees to be paid for operating the drones has been reduced to 4 from 72.

Previous rules included getting a unique authorization number, unique prototype identification number, certificate of manufacturing, airworthiness of the drone, certificate of maintenance, certificate of conformance, authorization of R&D organization, acceptance of existing drones, import clearance, operator permits, remote pilot instructor authorization, student remote pilot license, and drone port authorization, etc. All these rules have been abolished.

The quantum of fees was earlier linked to the size of the drone but now they have been reduced and are not linked to the drone size anymore. The new drone rules are very user-friendly.

Security Relaxations

There are security relaxations too. According to the previous rules, security clearance was needed before the issuance of a registration or license. Now, this clearance is not needed. Even foreign ownership is allowed now on the part of companies that operate drones, but the Directorate General of Foreign Trade will regulate the import of drones.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has informed that the Digital Sky Platform that was envisaged previously will now be developed into a single-window platform. Furthermore, the new drone rules include an interactive airspace map on the platform that will show three zones – yellow, green, and red. All of these zones have been marked so that the drone operators will be able to know where they can and cannot fly these drones. The government has significantly liberalized the rules in all aspects.

Apart from this, the drone corridors will be created for cargo deliveries. All these new drone rules are a step towards the new technologically empowered India. It is not just a dream anymore.
