Covid-19 Precautionary Dose Appointment – Know It All

India, from January 10, will be administering the precautionary dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to healthcare workers, frontline workers, and senior citizens above 60 years of age with comorbidities on the advice of their doctors. There is no requirement for new registrations. A prior precautionary dose appointment is not needed as the persons required to take the dose can directly take the appointment on Saturday or walk into any vaccination centre, said the Union Health Ministry.

Criteria and Eligibility For The Precautionary Dose

The Union Health Ministry stated on Friday that there is no requirement for new registration and those persons who have completed two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine can directly take an appointment or walk into the nearest vaccination centre. The precautionary dose will be administered to persons who have successfully completed 9 months (39 weeks) from the date of administration of the second vaccination dose as per guidelines. Eligibility for the precautionary vaccination dose will be declared on the basis of data recorded in the Co-Win system in regards to the day the second vaccine dose was administered. An SMS will be sent when you are due for the precautionary dose only.

The precautionary dose that is the third jab given will be the same as the previous dose that is Covaxin or Covishield, and no alterations will be made.

Precautionary Dose Appointments

For the third shot of the Covid-19 vaccine, no new registration is required. Eligible persons can directly walk into the nearest vaccination centre. On-site appointments for precautionary dose commences on January 10. The schedules for the precautionary dose of the Covid-19 vaccine will be published on the Co-Win app on January 8, following online precautionary dose appointment will start on Saturday evening. Those eligible to receive a precaution dose or booster shot for Covid Vaccination can book an online appointment from Saturday evening.

Government’s Views

As per the government’s predictions, approximately three crore health and frontline workers are eligible to receive the booster shot of precautionary dose of Covid vaccine in January. For senior citizens above 60 years of age with comorbidities, the government predicts 2.75 crore persons to be eligible for the precautionary dose. Very few such people are eligible to receive the third dose i.e. precautionary dose in January completing a gap of 9 months.
