Delta Plus Having A Stronger Affinity For Lung Difficulties - Experts claim

  • The number of identified Delta-plus variant cases could be greater because asymptomatic individuals with Covid-19 may be propagating the virus
  • It is too early to tell whether the Delta Plus variation can cause the third wave of Covid-19
  • Vaccination combined with appropriate mask use and careful adherence to Covid-19 prophylactic measures can reverse the damage caused by the Delta-Plus variation.

The Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 has a stronger affinity for lung difficulties than other strains, according to National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) director Dr. NK Arora. But this does not imply that it might cause severe lung disease or has higher transmissibility, he added.

On Tuesday, the Union health ministry categorized the Delta Plus variation, which was discovered on June 11, as a variant of concern. In India, 51 cases of Delta-Plus have been identified across 12 states, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number of cases. Delta-plus has a higher affinity for the mucosal lining of the lungs than other variations. Though, it is still unclear whether this causes extreme side effects or not.

Micro-Plans to Be Developed By State

According to Arora, the number of identified Delta-plus variant cases could be greater because asymptomatic individuals with Covid-19 may be propagating the virus. He emphasized the importance of keeping an eye on the spread to assess transmission efficiency. He stated that it is critical to highlight that the genetic surveillance component was detected at the appropriate time. Because the government has identified the variation of concern, states can now take action based on the data provided. To control the virus’s spread, state governments can develop micro-plans for districts where it has been found.

On Friday, Union Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan, wrote to the chief secretaries of seven states and one union territory, informing them of the districts where cases of this variant had been discovered and urging them to initiate widespread testing, prompt tracing, and vaccine coverage on a priority basis. According to Dr. Arora, it is too early to tell whether this variation can cause the third wave of Covid-19. He further stated that if one is attentive, they can notice that the number of Covid-19 instances has been fixed at 50,000 for the last 8-10 days, with some areas reporting larger numbers of cases. According to Arora, the tidal wave has not subsided. Arora further stated that immunization is required to mitigate the effects of the possible third wave of Covid-19.

How To Stop Delta Plus?

Dr. Arora believes that if vaccination is combined with appropriate mask use and careful adherence to Covid-19 prophylactic measures, the damage caused by the Delta Plus variation, as well as the likely third wave, can be effectively contained.
