The supreme court has already declared the Sedition law to be unconstitutional and something which should not be carried forward in the present times when the British rule has been over for about 75 years. Let us get to know a bit about this scuffle that led to 100 farmers being in police custody for a mere protest against the farm bills.

Event On 11th July

The event occurred on 11th July when the farmers gathered around the car of a BJP official in order to protest against the farm bills which might take away their daily earnings. This created a huge impact on the area and the 100 farmers were accused of destroying and causing irreparable damage to the automobile in which the officials were traveling.

The case of sedition was filed on the same day. This sparked a great deal of anger in many protesters across the country. A similar wave of anger had been seen in the nation when the veteran social activist, Father Stan Swamy, had died in police custody under the draconian UAPA law. This law stands in similarity with the Sedition law as well.

The police have also filed a case of “attempt to murder” against these farmers. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has called the FIR to be completely bogus, along with bringing attention to the unconstitutional Sedition law in India. The farmer leaders have announced that protesting against the Haryana Deputy Speaker cannot be considered as an act of sedition unless it is still British Raj in India! They have also asked the press to question if the present Indian scenario is the same as the British rule or not.
