  • 26th May marked the sixth month of farmer’s protests on the Delhi border
  • The farmers observe black day to observe this revolutionary movement
  • Effigies of leaders burnt in many villages of Punjab and Haryana.

The farmer’s protest in India had begun about six months ago in 2020, when the central government initiated to pass the farmer’s bill in Lok Sabha despite their disagreement. The farmers rallied up to the borders of Delhi with thousands of tractors during the first few months of protest. They protested on the borders, even during the coldest winters of Delhi, yet the government has not rescinded the bill. To mark the sixth month of their protest, the farmers observed the “Resistance Day” or the “Black Day” on 26th May 2021.

States Observing The Black Day

In Punjab and Haryana, the farmers gathered up in masses to burn the effigies of the leaders who have failed to pay heed to their demands. They have called this to be a “Black Day.” Farmers protested on a large scale in these states, and black flags were flown in every rally. Women from farmer backgrounds, led the protest rallies in the small villages of Ludhiana, whereas the men held the frontier at the border. It is almost like waging war, where men go off to fight the battles and women protect their fort from external damage.

In all of the villages, people burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BKU President, Gurnam Singh, has informed the press that no one was forced or coerced into participating in these rallies. The farmers and their families had decided to celebrate the day by opposing the Prime Minister, who failed to hear the pleas of the agricultural load bearers of his nation. He has also added that the farmers raised black flags at their homes, vehicles, and every other place to inform the Prime Minister that this indeed was a black day.

Solidarity Through Social Distancing

There had been some raising concerns that the farmer’s protests were not following the norms of social distancing during the pandemic. That is why the farmers decided to maintain a sense of solidarity rather than coming together in a protest rally. More than 12 opposing parties against the central government had sent their solidarity to the farmers on celebrating black day.
