The death of Yashpal Sharma has left a very deep wound in the hearts of the 1983 World Cup team of India. Many of the players have recounted their time with this veteran cricketer and they recollected the passion with which he pursued victory in each of the games. Gundappa Viswanath recalls the great partnership he had shared once with Yashpal Sharma. He has described Sharma as an absolute cricketer and has also stated that no one can actually reach the heights he had achieved during his career. Both the men had batted an entire day against England in a test match in 1982.

Feats of Yashpal Sharma in 1982 Chennai Test

Yashpal Sharma, who would have turned 67 the next month, passed away last Tuesday due to a massive cardiac arrest. He had been one of the most eminent cricketers in the history of Indian cricket. He represented India in 37 Test matches and 42 ODIs. The 1982 Chennai Test saw a massive score by the partnership of Gundappa and Sharma. Viswanath had scored a mammoth score of 222 whereas Sharma made his best record in Test cricket by getting 140 runs. He was very well-known for his magnum opus with Viswanath in the Chennai Test. They continue to be the third Indian pair to remain unbeaten through an entire day in the Test innings.

Playing a whole day in Test cricket is a very unique and laborious achievement. Not many people have been able to achieve this stance in their careers. Gundappa recollects that the day was very memorable for both of them. He described Yashpal Sharma as a dedicated and hardworking cricketer. Gundappa also informed the press that Sharma was someone whom you would call a “total cricketer”.

The Chennai Test had a rocky start as India was already 3 wickets down with only 150 runs. This is when the duo came to the field and made their legendary contribution to Indian Test history.
