Death Of Mahsa Amini – Reason For Iran Anti-Hijab Protests
As far as the past happenings are concerned, Mahsa Amini was visiting Tehran on a family trip when she was arrested by the morality police of the country, officially known as the guidance patrol. The reason given was that she was not adhering to the proper way of clothing as prescribed by the Iranian law, since she just had a loose scarf covering her head.
Post arrest, Mahsa was declared dead on 16th September, after three days of custodial torture, as per what is circulating in the media. While the police claim that she had died of a heart attack, the country’s people are not convinced and they blatantly blame the strict and regressive laws and their implementation. What Hijab Rules In Iran say?
Since the 1979 Iranian revolution, the mandatory hijab rules in Iran say that all women should wear a hijab in adherence to the government’s interpretation of the Islamic body of law, Sharia. Also, women’s hair and necks must be covered completely while they are required to be wearing loose-fitting clothing.
These regressive policies are backed by the government’s twisted interpretation of the Holy Quran and the preaching of Prophet Muhammad, also known as hadiths. Not only confined to that but these hijab rules in Iran are stubbornly enforced on the country’s womenfolk by the morality police or Gasht-e Ershad, and if they fail to do so, they are subjected to be jailed, fined or even physically abused by these policemen. It is all in the light that Iran is an Islamic republic and is said to be controlled by Islamic clerics.

After the death of Mahsa Amini came to light in the media, there had been an upsurge in the country with women protesting against the cruelty of the lawmakers but burning their own hijabs and cutting down their hair.
