Despite this rule, the princess will be marrying her long-term boyfriend, Kei Komuro. They had been involved in a four-year engagement program. Princess Mako will be leaving the Japanese royal family to enter the life of a commoner. This will leave behind just 12 women and 5 men in the royal family.

It has been understood that Japan will rather focus on maintaining their old traditions even when it means that their royal empire must come to an end. Several controversies have already risen after the engagement of Japanese Princess Mako. Perhaps the most important and debated controversy is when she refused the 152.5 million yen or $1.3 million as her dowry from the royal family. 

She is the first woman in her family who has done this since the Second World War Princess Mako is the niece of the 61-year-old Emperor Naruhito. The Japanese press and paparazzi are having a field day while criticizing the action of the princess.

The Age Hold Norms Broken

At the same time, there are people who have come to support the view of the Japanese princess. Her fans have said that this has been a radical step for the princess and it is very clear that she is willing to take all kinds of measures for her love. The princess is ready to uproot her financial security and privileges. She will no longer be in the comfort of her royal home. As an independent woman, princess Mako might be writing another history for the nation.

A New Dawn For Women

A new age is dawning for women all over the world. After the Second World War, there were only 67 members in the royal family of Japan. The old norms have made it possible only for the men to come on the throne. It is one of the rarest monarchies which does so. Nevertheless, we can consider the action of Japanese princess Mako as a protest against the normal royal lifestyle and its notions of patriarchy.
