The movie Jayeshbhai Jordaar is directed by Divyang Thakkar and is aimed to display a critique of the patriarchy and the harmful culture of female foeticide that stems from it.
The film follows the character of Jayeshbhai, played by Ranveer Singh who is a rather mild-mannered and heartwarming character. He resides in a deeply patriarchal society with his family, which consists of his overbearing, strict parents, his wife, and his 9-year-old daughter. His parents are the epitome of the conservative misogynists in the movie. Their character is reflected in their actions as they force their daughter-in-law to get illegal sex-determination examinations, and then subsequently get an abortion, all because of their desire to get a male heir for the family.
The titular character, while being a well-intentioned man, lacks the courage to stand up to the regressive practices which are flagrantly followed by his own parents. The movie follows the trajectory of Jayeshbhai with one question being posed to him: Would he get the courage to stand up to these patriarchal standards and make life better for the women in his life?

The Jayeshbhai Jordaar movie garnered mixed reviews from the audience as it made its release on 13 May 2022. It has been a popular critique that the writers were not able to find a fine balance between humor and the serious parts in the script. A lot of the scenes which talked about the heavy subject matter, such as female foeticide and sex determination demanded gravity in their execution but it often felt like the humor tried to overshadow these serious conversations.
However, the film is not all bad either. It was a fresh change to see a male protagonist in a Bollywood movie who does not try to fit in the overly masculine and macho archetype. The movie surely provided food for thought with its subject matter but it has been widely agreed that the writers couldn’t execute it well.

The film stars Ranveer Singh as the protagonist and Shalini Pandey plays the role of his wife. Boman Irani and Ratna Patak Shah play the role of Jayeshbhai’s patriarchal parents while Jia Vaidya is cast as his daughter.
Critics have widely reached the consensus that Ranveer Singh gave a great performance but he was held back by the weak script. He shone as the only worthwhile character as no other character was provided with as much depth or screen time.
Even though the movie boasts of being empowering for women, none of the women were provided with their own development. The mediocre writing and direction failed to utilize the talents of the actors.
