Meghalaya saw a hung assembly on Thursday, with chief minister Conrad Sangma’s party rising as the single-largest political organisation in the state, securing 26 seats out of a total of 59, but falling short of a majority. Hours later, the BJP, which won only two seats, issued a statement of endorsement to the NPP in order to form the state’s next government. On February 27, well almost 77.9% of the voting public cast ballots in the state. The counting of votes for the state’s 59 assembly segments began at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
With his National People’s Party (NPP) falling short of a majority with only 26 seats in the 60-seat Meghalaya assembly, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has contacted Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his support and blessings in establishing a new government, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has tweeted.

With the Meghalaya election results matching the exit polls, no group has managed to secure the majority mark, which in this case is 31. The NPP came out as the biggest party, five seats behind of halfway point, with Sangma winning the Tura South constituency. The small regional outfit United Democratic Party (UDP) delivered on its promise, finishing second and winning 11 tickets in the Meghalaya Assembly.

While the Congress won five of the 60 seats throughout the Meghalaya Assembly elections, the party’s state chief as well as Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala, was defeated by the ruling NPP’s Santa Mary Shylla in the Sutnga Saipung electorate in East Jaintia Hills by 1,828 votes. The Trinamool Congress won five seats, while the BJP won only two.
