Once, two evil spirits named Shumbha and Nishumbha had attacked Devaloka and crushed Indra and his military. God Indra along with all other gods went to goddess Parvati and asked for her help. Mata Parvati made Chandi and sent her to kill the evil presence. In the front line, Shumbha and Nishumbha sent two devils Chanda and Munda. Chandi made another goddess, Kali fight against Chanda-Munda. Kali killed the two of them also, consequently coming to be known as Chamunda.

Another evil spirit, Raktabeej, was sent off to kill Kali. Raktabeej had a boon that when a drop of his blood would fall on the ground, a look- the same of Raktabeej would get made. This implied that each drop of his blood that would fall on the ground would go about as a seed from which another devil, like Raktabeej, would show up. An enraged Ma Kaalratri began drinking

the blood of each clone of Raktabeej that she went after to forestall the blood

from dropping on the ground. This way she killed Raktabeej.Consequently, she even killed Shumbha and Nishumbha.
