Agriculture has always been the backbone of nations like India. Any kind of positive growth which has been seen during the period of the pandemic has been the result of proper agricultural practices. 2020 year has seen a massive depression in both the economy and health of the agricultural labourers of India.

There has been a higher number of suicides in the nation in comparison to the year 2019. The death of agricultural farmers and other labourers in India has increased by almost 29% in comparison to the year 2019. This is indeed a matter of great concern in the agricultural and financial sector of the nation.

Maharashtra Leading Agricultural Labourers Death By Suicide

Maharashtra is leading the list of deaths of labourers related to agriculture by suicides by a major number. 4,006 people lost their lives by suicide in Maharashtra alone because of the dubious laws related to agricultural practices. The numbers are followed by 2,016 deaths in Karnataka, 889 deaths in Andhra Pradesh, 735 deaths in Madhya Pradesh and 537 in Chhattisgarh. This has led to the final count of 10,677 deaths in the nation in 2020. The situation is quite grave. If the agricultural labourers are facing such a plight, these top states have to take the required steps to solve the issue.

Deeper Economical Issues

The increase in the suicides of agricultural labourers indicates that there have been some severe disorders in the entire farming segment. The new farm laws which have been introduced by the government will cause even more distress for the farmers who do not have any kind of land.

The 18% rise in the total number of suicides is even more indicative of the fact that the landless farmers are to be given at least some kind of scheme that can help them in the absence of work. This can also lead to farming on leased land.

A Matter Of Grave Concern

Almost 7% of the total suicides in the nation are committed by agricultural labourers. Another percentage includes the farmers and cultivators who have their own land but are not able to gain their daily needs from it. This is indeed a matter of huge concern and must be dealt with able hands by the government. In an agricultural country like India, this should not be the scenario for agricultural labourers.
