Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died later yesterday after being fatally shot while giving a speech at a political rally. Abe was giving a speech on a street in the city of Nara, when he was shot twice, once in the neck, and the second, fatally in the heart. Policemen present at the scene jumped to action and immediately caught the gunman. The suspect has been identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, who shot at the Japan ex-PM with a handmade weapon. He confessed to shooting Abe, citing the reason for fostering enmity with a “specific organisation” Abe had been linked to. A search of the suspect’s house revealed more such handmade weapons, similar to the attacking weapon, as revealed by the police at a news conference. Incendiaries were also found at the house, and residents were advised to evacuate the area for their safety.

Medical sources say that Abe was responsive for the first few minutes after the attack, but his state degenerated, and by the time he was transferred for treatment, no vitals were observed. Over 4 hours, the Japan ex-PM received over 100 units of blood transfusion, but in vain, as he was declared dead at 5:03 PM local time.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said, “It is barbaric and malicious and it cannot be tolerated. This attack was an act of brutality that happened during the elections – the very foundation of our democracy – and is absolutely unforgivable.”, condemning the attack.

Shinzo Abe, who was the longest-serving prime minister of Japan and the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, also served as Chief Cabinet Secretary (CCS) from 2005 to 2006. He was also the opposition leader in 2012. He built strong diplomatic relations with all countries to strengthen the base of Japan and continues to hold a special place in Japanese hearts.
