More About Shiv Kumar Sharma

Sharma was born on January 13, 1938, in the city of Jammu in the Kashmir area. His father, Uma Dutt Sharma, was a very well-known singer and tabla drummer. However, the road to owning an instrument that has been a perfect complement to Sufiana mausiqi (music) for decades and adapting it to the complex world of ragas, riyaaz, and relentless critique — all while creating slides and embellishments similar to other string instruments but just not imitating them — was lengthy and complex.

Sharma would occasionally claim that the difficulties he had in putting the santoor in the classical center stage were nothing relative to the contemplative trance it provided him. He made music that would be remembered for the innovative inflections he developed while handling a demanding and challenging instrument in the process. Sharma achieved something amazing in a culture that rewards slick branding: he made wonderful music without saying anything about it.

“Pt Shivkumar Sharma’s contribution to music is without a doubt that of a trailblazing performer and composer. But he will always be the icon who demonstrated that tradition also isn’t set in stone for me. “It’s dynamic, accepting new contributions, experiments, and forms from individuals who can break down the gates of orthodoxy with their quality, dedication, and brilliance,” said Shubha Mudgal, a Hindustani classical performer.

Shiv Kumar Sharma died, and this led to a huge loss in the Indian classical music industry.
