  • Tamil Nadu government passes NEET Bill to eradicate the exam for undergraduate medical courses
  • The bill has been supported by AIADMK in the state assembly
  • The government has claimed that the exam might be discriminatory towards students from underprivileged backgrounds.

The Tamil Nadu government has recently passed the NEET Bill, stating that the state does not want the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test to be used for medical studies within the state. The admissions to the undergraduate medical courses take place through the NEET examination throughout the country. Earlier there were separate exams for AIIMS and JIPMER, but both are now included under the same exam. The aim of the NEET Bill in Tamil Nadu is to avoid a single test for the admission of students into undergraduate medical courses.

NEET Bill Passed By M K Stalin

The NEET Bill has been passed by M K Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He has passed the bill under the terms that the state is competent to regulate the admission process for underprivileged students who might not have access to the examination process and adequate resources for preparation. He has also stated that the state will normalize admissions into the medical courses through selective exams and a special percentile of marks obtained in the class 12th exams.

The opposition party, AIADMK, has extended its support towards the NEET Bill by stating that the exam does nothing but fester inequality among the students on a major scale. Only well-to-do families can afford coaching classes which are becoming the measure for admission into the courses. This is causing a disadvantage for the underprivileged students of the nation.

Discriminatory Nature Of NEET

BJP has not supported this notion in the state assembly. They have argued that the medical profession must have the cream of the crop students of the society who can perform their best under extreme pressure. The NEET examination is the right way to measure the nerves of the students who might become the future doctors of the nation. However, this argument cannot make us overlook the fact that the number of doctors from marginalized communities is indeed dwindling. It is suggested that NEET has improved the standard of the medical profession, but it has not been proven yet!
