Tom Daley is a delighted champion after years of battling dark forces. He is a maestro and a spectacular diver, a son mourning his departed father, a gay athlete who found happiness and peace in his Oscar-winner partner, a young father, and now an Olympic champion.
Daley’s life was marred by tragedy and notoriety. In May 2011, Daley’s father died, and just before London 2012, he published his autobiography and appeared in a BBC documentary about his life. In the midst of a flurry of national interest, Daley was training for his first Olympic Games.
Tom Daley first came to prominence as a little, smiling child, and now, after 13 difficult years, he will compete in his fourth Olympics in Tokyo.
He has won two medals and forfeited a handful more during his voyage and participation, while also experiencing doubt and anguish as one of the few British athletes to come out publicly.

Daley, who has contested in each and every Olympic Games since Beijing in 2008, eventually received his first gold medal with diving companion Matty Lee in the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform event.
