The legal requirements which are related to the UAPA laws have concerned most of the people in the nation. Educationists like Father Stan Swamy had met his death after being locked under the UAPA act. Activists like Varvara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, and Umar Khalid have been arrested under this act as well.

Two lawyers and a journalist of India have recently been arrested by the Tripura police under the UAPA laws. They have moved towards the Supreme Court in order to seek justice against these draconian laws. The validity of the provisions which are related to the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act or UAPA is questioned under this appeal.

Charge Against UAPA Laws In The Supreme Court

The bench which is led by Chief Justice NV Ramana has agreed that the matter was of urgent importance. Advocate Prashant Bhushan will be fighting the case from the side of the petitioners. The two lawyers and the journalist were arrested by the Tripura police under the accusation that they were part of the communal violence that took place in the state.

The lawyers are Mr. Mukesh and Mr. Ansarul Haque Ansar and the journalist is Shyam Meera Singh. They have made sure to list the specific areas which are problematic in the UAPA laws.

Demands Of The Petitioners

The petitioners have mentioned that they have moved to the Supreme Court against the targeted political violence which has been shown towards the Muslim minorities in the state of Tripura.

The plea has also mentioned that the UAPA law is being brought against every single person who is trying to be a voice against the communal violence prevailing in India at the moment. This can be an attempt to monopolize the views of the nation towards a particular religion. The very act of dissent is being made illegal in the scenario of India at the moment with the UAPA laws. This can be a severe blow to the freedom of speech in India as well.
