After the uplifting of travel restrictions put in due to the COVID-19 pandemic, India has seen a significant spike in the number of people travelling to the US. And thus, steps are being taken to give priority to Indians for the issuance of Visas to lower the US Visa processing time. Let’s see how it is implemented.

Embassy’s Statement On US Visa Processing

A senior official at the US Embassy said that the aim is to go back to the pre-covid era in terms of travel capacity and visa issuance between India and the United States. Thus, they are prioritising India as number one so as to decrease the US visa processing time. The statement came out on 10th November 2022.

The US visa processing waiting time is expected to be brought down to 9 months which was earlier close to 450 days. To do so, the US has taken initiatives to increase the number of personnel and also proposed to increase the number of dropbox facilities.

The H(H1B) and L category Visa have already been recognised as a priority and other visa categories like B1, B2 and student US Visa processing time will also be brought down to 9 months.

In the last year alone, the US had issued approximately 82,000 Visas to Indians and their aim for next year’s mid is to issue 1.1 to 1.2 million Visas, in the summer of 2023. This will also bring India to number 2 priority in US visa preference countries. Current data shows that Mexico and China top the priority chart.
