India has 47 lakh excess Covid deaths.

By the end of 2021, Covid-19 is expected to have killed roughly 4,81,000 people. The current Covid-19 toll in India is more than 5,23,000 people.

Just 10 countries make up for 68 percent of global excess deaths, with India topping the list with 47 lakh.

“These new estimates use the best available data and have been produced using a robust methodology and a completely transparent approach,” said Samira Asma, Assistant Director-General for Data, Analytics and Delivery, at the WHO.

“Knowing how many people died in the pandemic will help us prepare better for the future... But most importantly, we need to honour the lives lost and we must hold our policymakers accountable,” she noted.
