On December 8, 1935, Dharmendra was born to Kewal Kishan Singh Deol, a teacher, and his wife Satwant Kaur. Dharmendra, like most school kids, hated going to school as his father punished him more than other kids.
In 1960, Dharmendra debuted with Arjun Hingorani's directed movie 'Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere'. For this movie, he earned only Rs. 51.
Dharmendra is also known as the ‘Action King' has seen magnificent era in the film industry. He became as recognised action hero after the 1966 film "Phool Aur Patthar" was released.
He married Prakash Kaur in 1954 and had 4 children namely Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Vijeeta Deol and Ajeeta Deol.

After converting to Islam, Dharmendra married Hema Malini in 1980 so that he could continue to be married to his first wife without having to file for divorce.
Dharmendra, the veteran actor has a theme restaurant (GARAM DHARAM) in New Delhi that honors his movies, characters, and dialogues.
In 2012, Dharmendra received the Padma Bhushan award. He received the Best Contribution to Indian Cinema Award in 2004. For his contributions to Hindi cinema, he also received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
