What Health Minister Says About Lockdown In Delhi Due To Omicron

Delhi reported its very first Omicron COVID-19 case recently. Delhi’s Health Minister, Satyendar Jain, has ruled out a possibility of lockdown in Delhi soon. He also mentioned that the city government is monitoring the situation vigilantly. 

Time For The Lockdown In Delhi?

The health minister stated on Monday that the government has adopted a graded response action plan and this will be implemented when the positivity rate of cases arise. He also stated, “There is no possibility and likelihood of lockdown at this moment”. 

He also stated that as the case rates are below 0.5%, hence lockdown will not be imposed in Delhi. The red level response was implemented previously as the positivity rate touched 15%. He further adds that the Delhi government is monitoring the situation closely and focusing on tracking and testing incoming passengers from foreign countries to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant. 

What Is The Graded Response?

When the positivity rate is 0.5%, it means that 5 out of 1000 people have been tested positive. In regards to this, the first level of the graded response system is implemented. On touching a positivity rate of 1%, the second level is imposed. The third level is implemented when the positivity rate hits 2%. The final stage is the red level when the positivity rate touches 5%.

Delhi Government On Omicron Variant

The government said health care professionals are actively testing people coming in from foreign countries and testing the same. Authorities highlight that the omicron variant is more transmissible than the Delta variant. 27 people were admitted to LNJP Hospital of which 17 have been tested positive and one was affected by the omicron variant. Patients are mostly showing asymptomatic symptoms. The other 10 people were tested negative in spite of coming in contact with the positive patients. 

Health Minister Rolls Out A Ban On International Flights

Post the outbreak of the omicron variant, Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has appealed to the central government to ban incoming flights from countries affected by the omicron variant for a short period of time in order to prevent its spread. The Health Minister further adds that due to delay on behalf of the central government in banning international flights the disease spread faster causing the results we are seeing.
