Margaret Alva, 80, was not surprisingly chosen unanimously as the opponent VP candidate by 17 opposition parties. She was born on Tuesday, April 14 1942 in Mangalore. She has a BA, and an LLB degree from Mount Carmel College and Government Law College, Bangalore, respectively. In 1964, at the age of 22, she married Niranjan Alva and had a daughter and three sons. Her husband Niranjan died in 2018 of chest congestion.
As for her political history, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha four times and elected once to the Lok Sabha in 1999 from the Uttara Kannada constituency. She served as a Central Minister at the age of 42. She also served as a minister under Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao. Her political career was disrupted in 2008 when she alleged that Karnataka election tickets were sold. However, she reconciled her differences with Congress shortly after and began working again with the INC. She has also served as the governor of Rajasthan, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat.
