World Ocean Day

“I watched the coral reefs that I studied as a student vanish in the blink of an eye, and for decades I wrote and spoke of ocean obituaries. But big scary problems without solutions lead to apathy, not action….Small steps were taken by many people in their backyards add up.”

The Earth is surrounded by 70℅ water, making our oceans the biggest ecosystem on this planet. With large biodiversity, our oceans are our biggest asset. But, recent studies reveal that we are on our way to losing our oceans to pollution! With the increasing amount of plastics in our oceans, the biggest producer of oxygen on the earth is in danger. Thus, to save our oceans from deterioration, the UN has established World Ocean Day on 8th June to raise awareness about the importance of the “lungs of our planet“ in our lives.

World Ocean Day History

In view of the increasing potential dangers to the oceans, the concept of World Ocean Day was proposed during the Earth Summit conference in Rio de Janeiro in the year of 1992. Followed by the incident, the United Nations General

Assembly in the year of 2008 finally declared June 8 as an international day to celebrate our oceans and to raise awareness among the public about the importance of oceans in our daily lives. World ocean day aims to promote the participation of the general public to protect their resources and opt for sustainable development.

World Ocean Day Significance

Oceans, the “lungs of the earth“, besides producing oxygen to support the living organisms, also dissolve a huge amount of carbon dioxide produced by living cells, which keeps our ozone layer intact!

Thus, the aim of World Ocean Day is to create awareness among the public to protect, preserve and manage our oceans from deterioration and use them sustainably. For decades, the World Ocean Network has gained support for the awareness of oceans celebrations with the aids of UNESCO!
