Nothing To Be Proud Of As Indian Matchmaking Gets Emmy Nominations

Many times, Indian content creators are dissatisfied with the fact that they are never chosen for the prestigious entertainment industry awards which are hosted by international houses. These include the Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, and several others. This might indicate that Indian content is far from being quality content. However, a strange thing has happened this year. Indian Matchmaking has been selected for Emmy nominations! Though, it is not something to feel proud of, as we will discuss here.

Problematic Factors Of Indian Matchmaking

Indian Matchmaking features Seema Taparia, a woman considered as one of the top matchmakers of Mumbai. For those who are unaware of it, matchmaking is a concept in India where the family of a person chooses a partner for them, which is the first and biggest red flag. Arranged marriages are one of those segments of the Indian culture that have not aged well. A show that glorifies the idea of selecting a partner based on superficial characteristics is extremely disturbing.

Netizens cannot get a hold of why a show with such degrading content gets an Emmy nomination. A show that considers a man’s desire to have a “flexible girl” for his wife seems abominable. The entire plot of the show is demeaning to women who are taking a stand for themselves in this patriarchal society. It encourages a bizarre concept that a man would want a wife who would live her life according to the will of his family and him. Illogical aspects like consulting an astrological guru to decide whether two people are a good match for each other are depicted in the show, and the list goes on.

How Could A Show Like This Get Nominated?

It is definitely up to the question of how can such a regressive show be nominated for the Emmys alongside several other shows which had a meaningful impact on people. We are all about celebrating culture, but not at the cost of the dignity of women.
