Day three of Navratri signifies fearlessness and courage that is depicted by Goddess Chandraghanta. Devi Chandraghanta has many names such as Chandrakhanda, Chandika, and Ranachandi. Devi Chandraghanta is of a golden complexion. Maa Chandraghanta has ten hands and she holds various weapons. The presence of a half-moon shaped like a bell on her forehead is the reason why she is called Chandraghanta. Goddess Chandraghanta rides a tiger or lion that represents bravery and courage. It is stated that the sound of her bell scares the asuras (evils) away.
The day when Lord Shiva and Parvati were going to be married, Lord Shiva came in such a form that terrified Parvati’s mother Maina Devi. He came with several snakes in his hair and with ghosts, sages, goblins, aghoris, and ascetics as part of his marriage procession. But when Maina Devi fainted seeing all this, Devi Parvati took the form of Maa Chandraghanta and requested Lord Shiva to take the form of a delightful prince.

Devotees should take a bath early in the morning and should wear clean clothes afterward. The idol of the goddess should be placed on a chowki and she should be bathed with Kesar, Ganga Jal, and Kewra. The goddess should be dressed in golden-colored clothes, and yellow flowers along with lotus are offered to Maa Chandraghanta. Sweets, panchamrit, and mishri are also offered to Devi Chandraghanta.
Significance Of Worshipping Goddess Chandraghanta
As stated in Shiva Purana, Goddess Chandraghanta is “Shakti”, also termed as “Aadi-Shakti” of Lord Shiva in his Chandrashekhara form. Each aspect of Lord Shiva is accompanied by Shakti, and thus they are Ardhanarishvara.
When Maa Chandraghanta was battling with demons, the sounds produced by the bell sent many demons to the abode of the death god. The goddess depicts fearlessness and courage. She reflects how one should not be fearful of anyone wicked or evil. Devotees of Goddess Chandraghanta are protected by her as she eliminates all the negativity in one’s life.
