The Delhi Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal has announced that the subsidy which is provided on electricity to everyone, would only be provided to those who want to opt for it. This decision on Electricity Subsidy In Delhi by the Chief Minister is coming at a time when there has been a shortage of coal in almost all parts of the country and will be implemented from the 1st of October.

During an online briefing, the chief minister said, “The Delhi government will now ask people whether they want to avail subsidy on electricity. From October 1, only those consumers who opt for it will be provided the subsidy,”
Why Did CM Kejriwal Decide To Take Such A Decision?
The chief minister tweeted from the official Twitter handle of the Aam Aadmi Party:
“Many people have written to me saying that they are capable so they do not want free electricity. We have decided that we will soon ask people whether they want an electricity subsidy. From October 1, power subsidy will be given to only those who will ask for it”

During the press conference, the chief minister also said that the money saved by the subsidies could be used for other purposes such as making a school.

Current Electricity Subsidy In Delhi
Currently, the Aam Aadmi Party party led Delhi government has been providing subsidies in Delhi in two forms. Firstly the poor households who consume less than 200 units of electricity are provided with a 100% subsidy. Secondly, households who consume between 201-400 units of electricity are provided with a subsidy of Rs.800.
Presently there are 30,39,766 consumers avail of the first subsidy and 16,59,976 consumers avail of the second subsidy.

Coal Shortage In Delhi
The decision by the Chief Minister has come after the Power minister of Delhi, Satyendar Jain wrote a letter to the central government about the critically low level of stocks of coal in many of the thermal power plants supplying electricity to Delhi. He requested the center for ensuring a proper supply of coal to these thermal power plants.
