About Goddess Katyayani – Day 6 Of Shardiya Navratri
On the sixth day of Shardiya Navratri, Maa Katyayani is worshipped. Goddess Katyayani rides a lion and she has four hands. In her left hand, she carries a lotus flower and a sword. In her right hand, she keeps Abhaya and Varada Mudras. Maa Katyayani is called the destroyer of evil and the planet Brihaspati is governed by her. Because she killed the demon Mahishasura, Devi Katyayani is also named Mahishasurmardini. The killing of Mahishasura is celebrated as “Durga Pooja”.
Goddess Katyayani was created from the combined energies of Lords Brahma, Vishu, and Shiva. This phenomenon took place when these three gods were angry at the demon Mahishasura, and the anger manifested itself in the form of energy rays. These energy rays were crystallized, and Katyayana Rishi gave it the proper form. Hence, the Goddess is called the daughter of Katayana. It has also been stated in some texts that Katyayana Rishi was a devotee of Goddess Durga, and being impressed with his devotion, Goddess Durga granted his wish of becoming the father of maa Katyayani.

Goddess decided to take birth as the daughter of Rishi Katyayana. Goddess Katyayani became very intelligent, strong, beautiful, and skilled at fighting as well. Mahishasura came to know about her and approached her for marriage. Maa Katyayani told him that if he wishes to marry her, then he should win a fight against her. Mahisarusa agreed and transformed himself into a buffalo. He seemed to be winning, but to his surprise, devi Katyayani climbed on his back and he struggled to get her off. Maa Katyayani placed her foot on the back of Mahishasura’s neck, pierced him with her trident, and eventually cut off his head.
