India has its own share of successful women who have made their name even in the world of patriarchy. These women refused to back down even in the toughest of times. One such woman in the history of India was Kadambini Ganguly. She was the first woman in Indian history to become a doctor. Most people had not known much about her in the past few years but this year, Google celebrated her birthday by creating a special graphic doodle on her 160th birth anniversary. This inclined people to know more about her and pay homage to the legend who had been the first woman to be a doctor in Indian medical history.

The doodle which had been designed by the Bengaluru-based artist, Oddrija, had the main building of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and a graphic image of the late Kadambini Devi. On her 160th birth anniversary, politicians and common people across the country hailed Kadambini Devi as a champion of women’s rights across India.

Achievements Of Kadambini Ganguly
It has been mentioned in Indian history that along with Anandi Joshi, Kadambini Ganguly became the first woman in colonial India to pursue medical studies. She had earned her degree in 1886. While Joshi had the privilege to study at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in the United States, Kadambini Devi had to pursue her studies in medicine at Calcutta Medical College (CMC).
Ganguly was born in a Brahmo family in 1861. She had liberal parents and was later married off to a man who was a person with principles. She was also among the first female graduates from Bethune College in Kolkata along with Chandramukhi Basu. She was married to Dwarkanath Ganguly. The couple had fought the battle for letting women study medicine in CMC. There was
strong criticism in the colonial Indian society when Kadambini decided to join the medical college in 1883.
