2nd October 2021 marks the 152nd birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is known as our ‘Father of the nation’. This year, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti coincides with Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, which was started by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on March 12. October 2 is also celebrated as the International Day of Nonviolence in the remembrance of Gandhi. In India, it is declared a national holiday.

About Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born on October 2, 1869. He was from Porbandar, Gujarat, recognized as the nation’s father and the person who led us to independence. He was, even as a child, known for expressing his feelings, and his thoughts and ideologies made India independent.

Mahatma Gandhi was successful in leading India to independence from the rule of the British colonial empire through non-violence or ahimsa. He was a law student in South Africa. He also campaigned for farmers and laborers, spoke up against the caste system, and was very vocal about expanding the rights of women in society.

The Dandi salt march by him in 1930 gained a lot of attention and popularity from people all around the globe. It was joined by many Indians who came forward to break the salt law. He was also on the frontline during the Quit India movement in 1942 and this movement drove Britishers away from India. His memorable teachings are still valued and followed by people of all age groups.

Gandhi Jayanti is observed to pay honor and heartfelt tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. On this day, people remember the valuable sacrifices of Gandhi to India’s struggle for freedom and the independence movement. His path-breaking beliefs and principles of ahimsa and swaraj are celebrated all across India. People from all over the world observe his teachings through several initiatives that direct the advancement of our society, surroundings, the city, and eventually the whole country.

This day is celebrated with prayer ceremonies, memorial services, and cultural activities in educational institutions, government offices, and socio-political institutions. Gandhi’s portraits are decorated with garlands, and his followers pay tributes to him and sing his beloved hymns.
