Who is Deendayal Upadhyay?

Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay was an Indian politician and the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party in its initial days. He joined RSS in the year 1937 and later on, after his training in RSS, he continued to be the preacher of the Jan Sangh which is now known as the BJP. In December 1967, Pandit Deendayal became president of the Jan Sangh.

In that Calicut session, his presidential speech focused on multiple aspects of the government’s coalition formation. Although no major events took place during his tenure as the president, due to his untimely death, it came to an end abruptly after 2 months in February 1968.

About Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay: Early Life And Education

He was born on 25th September 1916 in a Brahmin family in present-day Deendayal Dham of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. He was brought up by his maternal uncle and attended high school in Sikar. He did his intermediate study in Pilani, Rajasthan. 

Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay then graduated in Arts from Sanatan Dharma College, Kanpur. He wished to do his masters as well and for that, he moved to Agra and joined St. John’s College but due to family and financial issues, he couldn’t complete it.

One thing to know about Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay is that while he was a remarkable intelligence in his academics to have received awards and scholarships, he was also a prominent creative writer and editor. He has worked as a journalist in a daily, ‘Rashtra Dharma’ and wrote columns for a weekly, The Organiser’. 

After meeting the founder of RSS, K. B. Hedgewar, he underwent a 40-day training vacation at a Nagpur camp of RSS. He was also regarded as the ideal swayamsevak of RSS for his pure ideologies that drove Sangh’s mission and vision, being the moral inspiration.

1. Integral humanism 

Deendayal Upadhyay is best known for his principle of ‘integral humanism’ which talks about the integration of indigenous ‘Indian culture’ with the social, political, and economic layout of the nation which gives a holistic approach to the welfare of humankind. He believes that the economic prosperity index alone cannot be a measure to deduce the happiness of the citizens.

2. Bharat 

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay wanted an Indian political ideology free from western influence. He focused on including the vision, schemes, and technologies that are indigenous, made for our people by our people. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay thought that western colonisation had blocked the growth and expansion of the Indians. 

3. Polity 

He visualised a decentralised polity for India. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay’s main focus was to create a self-reliant Indian economy and that will happen when the villages are made to be the base of it.

4. Welfare 

He believed that the political power must remain with the citizens and not the wealthy classmen. Thus, he was against favouring the corporate world by compromising the people’s welfare.

How Deen Dayal Upadhyay Died?

There are several mysteries regarding how Deen Dayal Upadhyay died. In 1967, after being elected as the president of Jan Sangh, he was supposedly travelling to Patna by train. Allegedly, it is believed that he was murdered, after his body was found on the train tracks of Mughalsarai station, holding a five rupee note in his fist. 

Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay was last seen at Jaunpur, before his mysterious death. Although the case was dismissed as being of theft or robbery, the case remains unsolved till date. This was all about a prominent BJP figure, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay.
