The last few hours of Saturday proved to be fateful for Sri Lanka as Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana (@YapaMahinda) declared that Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, popularly known as ‘Gota’, would resign on 13 July 2022 (Wednesday). Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had previously announced that he would resign from his position.

Two Major Decisions of the All-party Meeting
Dullas Alahapperuma, a Sri Lankan MP said that two key decisions were agreed upon in the all-party meeting, headed by Parliament Speaker Abeywardana to resolve the Sri Lanka political crisis. Alahapperuma tweeted, “Participated in the Party Leaders meeting, presided by the Speaker. An overwhelming majority agreed to the following.
- The President @GotabayaR & the Prime Minister @RW_UNP must resign immediately.
- Speaker @YapaMahinda to become the Acting President.” on July 9, 2022.
Apart from these two major decisions are taken by the opposition to solve Sri Lanka political crisis, a few more decisions were taken:
- Parliament is to be convoked within one week’s time to elect a new president.
- A coalition government, representing all parties, must be formed in the same week.

Sri Lanka Crisis Explained
Party leaders in the parliament demanded the resignation of both the President and Prime Minister after protests turned ugly with protests in front of the President’s office turning into violent attacks on the President’s personal residence. Sources told AFP that the President fled his house just a few moments before protesters broke through all police barricades, setting the house on fire.
Shoot-on-sight orders were issued immediately to bring the violence under control. Police escorted President Rajapaksa to a safe location. Protests turned so violent that at least 21 people, including 2 police were grievously injured and hospitalised, according to Reuters. While the President’s decision of resignation was declared by Speaker Abeywardana, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe released a voice statement that said –
“Today in this country we have a fuel crisis, a food shortage, we have the head of the World Food Program coming here and we have several matters to discuss with the IMF. Therefore, if this government leaves there should be another government.”
