Major had won 3 gold medals for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936 consecutively in the Olympics. He had been one of the most prominent players of the nation, who was able to bring victory with the easy swipes of his hockey stick. The crucial victory against the German team in 1936 was mostly to his credit. Out of the seven goals netted against the German team, three were scored by the legendary Major Dhyan.

The Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur, extended his best wishes towards the sportspersons who have dedicated their lives to bring glory to the nation at the international level. He remembered the birth anniversary of Mojar Dhyan with fondness and promised to make India a top runner in most sporting events.

He was the first hockey player who had a commemorative post stamp designed in his honor. The lifetime award in sports has been named after Major to signify his importance in Indian sports.

The national stadium in India has also been named after him, as he continues to inspire millions of hearts to pursue sports. The passion for one’s dream can be learned from the hard path traveled by Dhyan Chand in his pursuit of excellence. National Sports Day is celebrated on his birthday, 29th August. The goalkeeper of India’s present hockey team, PR Sreejesh, made a moving post on the birthday of Major as well.
Recently, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna was renamed Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award in order to mark his contribution to Indian sports. The eminent player was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.
