Knowing Sarla Thukral

Thukral was born in the year of 1914 when India was still under the grasp of British rule. She was the first woman who had achieved the ‘A’ grade license just after 1,000 hours of flight. This is a great achievement for both male and female pilots.

She was married off at the age of 16 and she got her aviation license when she was just 21 years old. She even had a four-year-old son when she got the aviation license for the first time in Indian history. Thukral had been a student of the Lahore Flying Club. The club was set up during the time before the partition. She had also gone for commercial pilot training in Jodhpur. This training session took place after the death of her first husband in 1939.

Importance Of Women In History

One must never forget that the hand which rocks the cradle can also rule the world. Sarla Thukral was a mother when she decided to become a commercial pilot and this is indeed commendable. Women in the previous days were always locked up in their houses and kitchens, and could only dream to achieve the career they wished for. In order to respect the stand that was taken by Sarla Thukral, Google decided to honor her with a doodle on her 107th birth anniversary.
