Narendra Modi’s Foreign Trips In The Past Two Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the United States of America towards the end of September. This will be Modi’s first foreign trip in almost six months. This is the first time PM Modi will be visiting the United States of America since President Joe Biden took over. PM Modi will visit the States between 22nd and 27th September and it is expected that he will visit Washington and New York. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Foreign Trips In The Last Two Years

Since the year 2014, PM Modi has made over 100 trips abroad and has visited at least 60 countries. After the outbreak of coronavirus, all diplomatic travel was stopped. 2020 was the only year when PM Modi did not visit any foreign country since the year 2014. It might have also saved a lot of taxpayer’s money. Here is a list of PM Modi’s foreign trips in the last two years:

1. Bangladesh: March 2021

The first foreign visit by Prime Minister Modi after the outbreak of coronavirus took place in March 2021. He traveled to Bangladesh for two days and took part in commemorations of three epochal events in the country: Mujib Borosho or the birth centenary of Bangladesh’s Father of Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, 50 years of diplomatic ties, and 50 years of Bangladesh’s war for liberation.

2. Brazil: November 13th – 14th, 2019

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Brazil on November 13th-14th in the year 2019 to attend the 11th BRICS summit. At the summit, he met the leaders of the four major emerging economies of the world – Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa. There he called for closer cooperation in fields such as counter-terrorism, trade, culture, reinforcement of bonds, and formulation of a common acknowledgment of global issues.

During this visit, an amount of INR 20,01,61,000 was spent on chartered flights.

3. Thailand: November 2nd – 4th, 2019

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Thailand in November of 2019. He visited Thailand to attend the ASEAN – India, East Asia, and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) summits. He visited as he got an invitation from the Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha.

This tour cost almost INR 6,68,34,000 to the government.

4. Saudi Arabia: October 29th, 2019

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his visit to Saudi Arabia in October 2019, met Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and had trust talks with the crown prince. These two signed an agreement for establishing the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council.

On this particular foreign trip, many major settlements were signed, including an MoU to roll out the RuPay card – India’s digital payment system, and another bringing coordination regarding the e-migration systems between India and Saudi Arabia.

INR 5,03,03,000 was spent on this tour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

5. United States: September 20th – 27th, 2019

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last trip to the United States was in September 2019. He went to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UGNA). He traveled to Houston and attended the “Howdy, Modi!” event. It was organized in honor of PM Narendra Modi by the Indian diaspora. In this meeting, both the parties spoke about strengthening the ties between India and the US, and also addressed each other as “loyal friends”.  

An amount of INR 23,27,09,000 was spent by the government for this trip to the United States.

6. Russia: September 4th – 5th, 2019

The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russia happened in September 2019. In this visit, he met Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed further ways to continue the special and privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. PM Modi also called President Putin a “good friend” and stated how the friendship between India and Russia is not restricted to their respective capitals.

A total amount of INR 12,02,80,000 was put in for this tour of PM Modi.

7. UAE and Bahrain: August 23rd – 25th, 2019

This was a three-day visit to the UAE and Bahrain. Expressive talks were held with top leaders of the two countries on bilateral, regional, and global problems that were of interest to both nations. In the UAE, PM Modi received the “Order of Zayed”, which is the highest civilian honor in the country. His visit to Bahrain was the first-ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to the Gulf nation.

A grand total of INR 14,91,68,000 was the expense of this tour.

8. France: August 22nd – 23rd, 2019

PM Modi visited France where he held a summit interaction with President Emmanuel Macron to further boost the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership. He also met his French Counterpart Edouard Philippe and talked with him about the Indian Community. There, he also dedicated a memorial to all the Indian victims of the two Air India crashes that took place in France in the years of 1950s and 1960s.

9. Bhutan: August 17th – 18th, 2019

Modi’s foreign trip to Bhutan after his first re-election took place in the year 2019. He held a wide range of discussions over the expansion of bilateral partnership with his Bhutanese counterpart Lotay Tshering and signed 10 MoUs.

10. Japan: June 27th – 29th, 2019

PM Modi traveled to Japan to attend the 2019 G-20 in Osaka. There he met several global leaders and also addressed an informal meeting of BRICS. He also held bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump. In the informal BRICS leader’s meeting, he emphasized the need to stop all the mediums of support to terrorism and racism.

11. Kyrgyzstan: June 14th -15th, 2019

PM Modi went to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in June of the year 2019. INR 9,37,11,000 was the expense of this trip.

12. Sri Lanka: June 9th, 2019

This was PM Modi’s first visit to Sri Lanka after returning to power. He held talks with Sri Lanka’s former President Maithripala Sirisena in June of 2019. After the attack on Easter Sunday that killed 250 people, India had been providing Intelligence and assistance in the investigation of the Islamic State-led attack.

13. South Korea: February 21th – 22th, 2019

During this two-day visit to South Korea in the year 2019, PM Modi was awarded the Seoul Peace Prize 2018 for his contribution to international cooperation and fostering global economic growth. The trip to South Korea cost INR 9,48,38,000.

Final Words

PM Modi’s visit to the US will address the crisis of Afghanistan and these two sides will also work on an ambitious agenda of the Indo-Pacific region. On the 25th of September, PM Narendra Modi is expected to address the annual high-level Assembly session as per a provisional list of speakers released by the UN. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s second diplomatic foreign trip since the pandemic.
