The Actual Meaning Of Dhanteras

Given here is the actual meaning of Dhanteras along with its significance. Dhanteras is made of two words- Dhan and Teras. ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘Teras’ means thirteen. This gives us the actual meaning of Dhanteras – as a festival of wealth that falls on the 13th day of the lunar calendar in the month of Kartik Krishna Paksha. 

Dhanteras is also called Dhantrayodashi which again falls on the 13th day of the calendar. The day is also known as Dhanvantari Trayodashi, as an ode to the God of Ayurveda who could grant any living being a suffering-free and healthy life, Lord Dhanvantari. In India, Ayurveda day is also celebrated along with Dhanteras.

Why Dhanteras Is Celebrated?

Dhanteras is seen as a celebration to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and her blessings of wealth and prosperity into the house along with Lord Dhanvantari’s blessings of good health. 

The reason why Dhanteras is celebrated is that the day is considered auspicious for precious metal purchases and also marks the beginning of the Diwali festival. It is also a favourable time among the Hindus for precious metal purchases like gold and silver.

How Dhanteras Is Celebrated?

The most common widespread practice in celebration of Dhanteras is buying gold, silver or other metals. On this day, Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped for good health and long life, along with Goddess Lakshmi, who is the harbinger of immense wealth and prosperity. 

The houses are thoroughly cleaned and whitewashed to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and diyas are lit in the evening to ward off all evils and bring home good luck and happiness from Lord Dhanvantari. People also make Rangoli with rice flour paste in the shape of little footprints that indicates Goddess Lakshmi’s arrival. 

People offer sweets and worship Lord Kuber, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Dhanvantari and Lord Ganesha on Dhanteras. Diyas are lit especially under the Tulsi plant for Lord Yama to protect one’s house from the unexpected arrival of bad omen. This is entirely how Dhanteras is celebrated in India.
