About Goddess Kaalratri – Day 7 Of Shardiya Navratri
On 12th October, Saptami of the nine-day festival Navratri will be observed. On this holy occasion, Devi Kaalratri will be worshipped by the devotees. Goddess Kaalratri is the fiercest form of Goddess Durga. Her name in Sanskrit is a combination of Kaal, meaning death or time, and Ratri, meaning night or darkness. Hence, Kaalratri means the one who brings the death of the darkness. Maa Kaalratri rides a donkey and her complexion is dark. She has long untied hair and wears a garland of skulls around her neck. She has four hands. Devi Kaalratri holds a thunderbolt and a scimitar in two hands, and the other two hands of the Goddess can be seen gesturing Abhaya (protection) and Varada (blessing).
Demons Shumbha and Nishumba succeeded in defeating the gods with the help of Chand, Munda, and Raktabeej. They began to rule all three worlds and started creating chaos. All the gods together called out to Goddess Parvati for help. Chandi was born and successfully killed all the demons but was unable to defeat Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej. Goddess Kaalratri was born from the Goddess’ forehead. Maa Kaalratri killed Chanda and Munda but it was getting difficult to kill Raktabeej because he had a boon given by Lord Brahma that every drop of his blood will create a replica of him. To stop this, Devi Kaalratri started drinking the blood of each clone and eventually killed Raktabeej.
