Author Geetanjali Shree created history when she became the author of the first book originally written in Hindi to win the International Booker Prize. The book was named, “Tomb of Sand’ in English and was called ‘Ret Samadhi’ in Hindi. After winning the International Booker Prize 2022, this book became the first book written in Hindi to win any prestigious award. On receiving the International Booker Prize 2022, the Delhi-based writer said that she was completely overwhelmed” and “bolt from the blue”. The award ceremony was held in London and award money of 50,000-pound ($63,000) will be given to the winners of the international Booker Prize 2022. 

The prize money will be split between Geetanjali Shree and the author who had translated the book into English.

Author Geetanjali Shree’s Reaction

After receiving the International Booker Prize 2022, Geetanjali Shree said, There is a melancholy satisfaction in the award going to it. ‘Ret Samadhi/Tomb of Sand’ is an elegy for the world we inhabit, lasting energy that retains hope in the face of impending doom. The Booker will surely take it to many more people than it would have reached otherwise, that should do the book no harm.”

The story of the “Tomb Of Sand” revolves around an octogenarian who has to battle through depression after the death of her husband. After which she has to deal with a lot of challenges such as striking friendships with other transgender people, and traveling back to Pakistan to meet her ghosts.

Through the story, she tries to understand what it actually takes to become a feminist and a mother. Instead of dealing with such issues with stoicism, the author carries forward the plot with the help of humor. The story also brings forward many important issues like national conflicts, religion, boundaries, and gender.

About Geetanjali Shree

Geetanjali Shree was born to a civil servant and was raised in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Her first book was  ‘Bel Patra‘  which was published in 1987 in Hindi Magazines. She was inspired by the lack of stories in the Hindi language.
