She is worshipped on the Pratipada Or the first day of Navratri. But, who is Shailputri Devi? As per the Maa Shailputri story, she is one of the first incarnations of Devi Durga. Shailputri Devi was the wife of Lord Mahadev who took rebirth to reunite with him. The celebration of Navratri is incomplete without worshipping Mata Shailputri Devi. Maa Shailputri is also known by the names Sati, Bhavani, Parvati, or Hemavati. Who Is Shailputri Devi? 

One of the divine manifestations of Maa Durga, Shailputri Devi is the first among the Navadurgas who is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. Mata Shailputri was the daughter of the King of Mountains – “ Parvat Raj Himalaya“ , thus, she is also known by the name of Himavati! 

Appearance Of Shailputri Devi 

Born to father “Parvat Raj Himalaya“, the name Shailputri was derived from two Sanskrit words – “Shail meaning mountain and Putri meaning daughter. The embodiment of the Tridev – Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, the appearance of Shailputri Devi reflects a pleasant aura that is believed to take away the pains and sufferings of the Shailputri Devi devotees and instill in them knowledge and soul enlightenment!

The appearance of Shailputri Devi describes that she has a crescent moon on her forehead and she sits on the white bull – also known as Nandi. She holds a Trident in her right hand and the sacred lotus flower in her left hand. 

Maa Shailputri Story

Maa Shailputri Story reflects the sacred bonding and eternal love between Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. Mata Parvati and Lord Mahadev bear a sacred bonding that is unbreakable. In her previous life, Mata Shailputri was born to King Daksha who never liked Lord Shiva. As the story goes, Sati, the past life incarnation of Goddess Parvati, fell in love with Mahadev and later tied the knot with him in the absence of King Daksha. 

When the King came to know about her affair, he became very angry which ultimately followed him in breaking all the ties with Sati. But, destiny had different plans for Sati. King Daksha decided to avenge her daughter’s marriage with Mahadev and to fulfill his cruel desires, Daksha organised a Yagna where all Gods and  Goddesses, along with the Sages were invited. But, he did not invite his daughter and her husband, Mahadev to the Yagna. 

When Mata Sati learned about this event, she decided to reunite with her parents, despite the repeated warning of Lord Shiva! Ultimately, Sati managed to convince her husband and together they set for Dakshapuri. But, to her utter surprise, King Daksha insulted Mahadev before the other invitees!  

Sati couldn’t bear her husband’s insult and decided to end her life by surrendering to Agnidev. She later took rebirth as the daughter of Himavat and finally reunited with the love of her life,  Lord Shiva, and became known as Mata Parvati! This was the whole Maa Shailputri Story as described in Puranas.

Why Is Maa Shailputri Worshipped On First Day Of Navratri? 

The nine-day-long celebration of Navratri begins with worshipping Mata Shailputri. But, why is maa Shailputri worshipped on first day of Navratri? The reason is that the divine incarnation of Maa Durga is believed to rule the root chakra or the Muladhara chakra in our body. 

It is believed that worshipping Mata Shailputri fuels spiritual awakening in the devotees. She blesses her devotees with Shakti or strength to endure the tough path of life with courage. She instills in their enlightenment and divine knowledge! 

Conclusion

During Shailputri puja, ghee is offered to Shailputri Devi on the first day of Navratri. It is believed that worshipping Mata Shailputri blesses the worshippers with a healthy and happy life. Happy Navratri! May Mata Shailputri bless us all.
