Justice BV Nagarathna As The First Woman Chief Justice Of India
Under the jurisdiction of Chief Justice NV Ramana, the Supreme Court has recommended the names of nine judges who have been excellent at their work and can be elevated to the top court within the span of a few years. Justice BV Nagarathna is presently a judge in the Karnataka High Court. She had been appointed as the Additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, early in 2008. She was appointed as a permanent judge just two years later because of her work. Her name has been suggested by the Supreme Court Collegium.
Justice BV Nagarathna has a month-long tenure to serve, and her appointment will be historic in the terms of the Indian judiciary system. The two other female judges who are on the list of recommendations are Justice Hima Kohi and Justice Bela Trivedi. Justice BV Nagarathna will be following in the footsteps of her father ES Venkataramiah who was also the Chief Justice of India in 1989.
