In the year 1950, Hindi was declared the official language. In Article 343 it is mentioned that ‘The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in the Devanagari script’ this is why Hindi is the national language of India.

Around 40% of the Indian population speaks Hindi. The Hindi language is known to be the second language for around 300 million people and the mother tongue for about 180 million people. 

Who First Accepted Hindi As The National Language Of India?

Bihar in the year 1881, accepted Hindi to replace Urdu to be the official national language. Even now, a large number of people from the southern part of India oppose Hindi being the national language of India.

According to Mahatma Gandhi, the ‘Language of Unity’ is known to be Hindi and that’s why Hindi is our national language. Several commonly used Hindi words are easily understood by people all over the world. Some of such words are roti, guru, chai and so on. Though the south Indians did not accept Hindi to be the national language, they try to accept it.
