  • This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a complete lunar eclipse.

A complete lunar eclipse will be seen on 26th May, which will also be characterized as the Super Blood Moon. The moon will appear to be magnified more than usual and, it will be much closer to the revolving orbit of the Earth. This will be the scientific and astronomical highlight of 2021, where the full moon, blood moon, and lunar eclipse will all occur on the same day.

Why Does The Eclipse Moon Appear Red?

The celestial bodies are far away from the Earth and, it is nearly impossible to see them in the actual colours in which they exist. Since the moon has no colour of its own, it usually reflects the light it receives from the sun. When this reflected light travels down to the earth during the times of lunar eclipse, the particles in the atmosphere scatter it. As a result, our perception of the actual colour becomes wrong. The red light usually has the maximum wavelength that does not allow it to scatter as much as the other lights like blue or violet. Since red and orange can travel further, our eyes often perceive the lunar eclipses as reddish.

The red-coloured lights are often used as signals for danger and laser light. This is because red light can travel a large distance through the atmosphere without being affected by the particular matter of the atmosphere. It is also one of the light colours which has the lowest frequencies. As a result, the red light is not distorted under any circumstances and, it is the only one that can reach our eyes during a total moon eclipse.
