In Hindu mythology, it is said that lord Brahma was cursed by Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. But, why did Saraswati curse Brahma? There are many myths and stories stating why Saraswati cursed Brahma. A few of them are narrated in this article.

When lord Brahma decided to create the universe, he sought the help of Saraswati to compose hymns to praise the newly formed universe. Saraswati agreed with lord Brahma and was ready to help him. They together started making the universe. As a result, Rigveda, the oldest sacred text in Hinduism, was composed. 

While making the universe lord Brahma got strongly attracted to Saraswati due to her remarkable beauty and wisdom, and started making inappropriate advances towards her. This action of lord Brahma offended Saraswati. Goddess Saraswati tried to escape him by changing her forms, but Brahma continued his action.

Saraswati got angered and frustrated by Brahma’s behaviour, and hence cursed him, saying that he would not be worshipped universally. This was the reason why did Saraswati curse Brahma. Further, this is the reason why Brahma is not worshipped as popularly as the other major gods. This also teaches us to respect our boundaries and maintain purity in our actions.

Another story about why Saraswati cursed Brahma is that one day Brahma was to perform a religious ritual. He was waiting for Saraswati so that he could begin to perform the ritual. The ritual was supposed to be performed by the husband and wife, and at a precise time. But, Saraswati had still not arrived and the accurate time for the ritual was passing. 

After waiting for a long time, the gods decided to get Brahma married to another woman for the ritual. They brought Gayatri and got Brahma married to her. And hence, they performed the ritual together without Saraswati.

When Goddess Saraswati finally arrived, she saw Brahma performing the ritual without her and with a new wife. At that time, she got furious and Saraswati cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped ever again by humankind. This is why, Brahma is not worshipped by Hindus, even though he is one of the three important gods.

In some parts of the other version of the story, after Saraswati cursed Brahma, Lord Shiva arrived there and requested Saraswati to calm down her anger and decrease the intensity of the curse. When she calmed down, she said that only Pushkar would be the place where Lord Brahma would be worshipped and would have a single famous temple.

Therefore, because of the curse, Lord Brahma has been worshipped in Pushkar, Rajasthan and only a few other places in India. It is believed that still Saraswati is there and sat near the Brahma temple out of her love for him, and to give her blessings to all married women for the long life of their husbands.

Few Final Words

There are many variations of Hindu myths and legends behind the reason why Saraswati cursed Brahma. Different texts and narrations give slightly different versions of the same story. Therefore, it is important to note the moral of the story and not the literal meaning of it.
