Shiv Sena’s Internal Conflicts
In the Sena vs Sena trifle, the Election Commission had to see a major difference of opinion for the upcoming by-election in Andheri (East) of Mumbai, Maharashtra. With Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction claiming the official symbol of ‘bow and arrow’ for their party, they demanded that Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena should not be allowed to use the symbol.
Thus, ECI decided to freeze the symbol altogether for both the party’s use in the upcoming election. The Election Commission also asked for both Shiv Sena parties to submit an alternative name and symbol to be chosen.
Poll Sign Allotted By Election Commission
After a series of rejected symbols, ECI finally announced on the 10th and 11th of October, the new names and symbols for Thackeray’s and Shinde’s Shiv Sena. The interim order also stated that these are temporary allotments and will be in use till the dispute is resolved over the use of ‘bow and arrow’.
Uddhav Thackeray Shiv Sena Symbol and Name
On 10th October, Uddhav Thackeray Shiv Sena name was given as Shiv Sena – Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray. The new Uddhav Thackeray Shiv Sena symbol will be a flaming torch or ‘Mashaal’.
Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena Symbol and Name
The previously proposed symbols of ‘Trishul’, ‘Gada’ and ‘Rising Sun’ by Shinde’s Shiv Sena were declined by the poll body due to their religious implications. On 11th October, Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena name was given as Balasahebanchi ShivSena. The new Eknath Shinde Shiv Sena symbol will be two swords and a shield or ‘Dhal Talwar’.

Shiv Sena Symbol Meaning
Shiv Sena is a Maharashtra-based political party whose foundation was laid on 19th June, 1996 by Bal Thackeray, a professional satirical cartoonist. His motive was to preserve and protect the rights of the Marathis, specifically. And thus, the party’s symbol ‘bow and arrow’ came into being.
Shiv Sena symbol meaning depicts a weapon to kill enemies, a symbol to protect its own people fiercely. The symbol is usually drawn on a saffron background which is significant in Hinduism as Tilak’s colour. Thus, Shiv Sena’s ideologies are more on the ethical and regional side.
