Meaning Of Narsimha

The word Narsimha traces its roots to two Sanskrit words, “Nar” meaning human, and “Simha” meaning lion. Lord Narsimha, the manifestation of Lord Vishnu, the creator of the Universe was half-lion and half-human and possessed the ferociousness and powers of a lion, with physical features resembling a man.

On the sacred occasion of Narsimha Jayanti, Lord Narsimha appeared in the form of half lion and half human and ended the life of devil King Hiranyakashyap! According to ancient scriptures and Puranas, Hiranyakashyap was born to sage father Kashyap and mother Diti. 

With his prayers and true devotion, he impressed Lord Brahma who blessed him with immortality. He was also blessed with immense supernatural powers through which he captured all the realms of life. Moreover, he could not be killed by any human, animal, or evil spirits, neither in day nor night, nor in-home or outside. Amidst all this, he was blessed with a son named Prahlad, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. 

Enraged by the actions of his son towards spiritualism, he tried many a times to kill his own son, but failed. Soon after he crossed human limits, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Narsimha, half-human half-lion on the sacred hours of Godhuli, or the time before sunset. That’s why Narsimha Jayanti is celebrated and Lord Narsimha is always worshipped before sunset hours. 

Narsimha Jayanti Significance

It is believed that Lord Narsimha blesses his devotees with courage and power to follow the path of righteousness. Negative energies are also eliminated if an individual performs Narsimha puja. The devotees are blessed with prosperity, abundance, and courage, and Lord Narsimha always protects them from evil forces. 

While there are about 74 different forms of Lord Narsimha, 9 types of them are considered the most sacred among all known as Nav Narsimha. Narsimha Swami Temple in Andhra Pradesh worships all these none forms of Lord  Narsimha. 

What To Do On Narsimha Jayanti?

On the sacred tithi of Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi on May 14, devotees of Lord Narsimha observe Narsimha Jayanti. It is important to wake up at the Brahmo Muhurat and purify oneself by taking a holy bath at the Ganga, following which clean clothes should be worn. 

Devotees should follow a fast from the Narsimha Jayanti sunrise to the next day’s sunrise. Though fasting should be observed, devotees can have one meal a day, which should exclude cereals and grains and non-veg items, consuming saatvik food is a must. Besides Lord Narsimha, Goddess Lakshmi should also be worshipped and both of them should be offered flowers, sweets, Kesar, kumkum, and coconut. Chanting of Narsimha mantra is a must.
