1. Kalka-Shimla Railway
This heritage train runs between Kalka and Shimla and treats your eyes to the beautiful views of forests and hills. This rail track was built in 1898 with the aim of connecting Shimla to the rest of the rail system of India. It was built by HS Harington and is now being operated by the Northern Railway of India. Lying in northwest India, this track is a 762mm narrow gauge railway. It was recognized as a UNESCO heritage site in 2007 and was added to the mountain railways of India, as well as recognized as a World Heritage site in 2008.
2. Darjeeling Himalayan – The Toy Train

3. Nilgiri Mountain Heritage Train
The Nilgiri Mountain train, which is a heritage train situated in Tamil Nadu, was originally built in the colonial period by the British, in 1908. This train runs between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam, which is also known as Ooty. The train takes about 4.8 hours to complete its journey. During summer, four trains run, as it is the most popular time of the year, and tourists from both near and far come to this site. However, for the rest of the year, only one train runs each way. This was declared as a UNESCO heritage in 2005 and now operates under the Salem railway division.
4. Matheran Hill Railway
Although this train is listed on the tentative list of UNESCO world heritage trains, you wouldn’t want to miss it. The Matheran hill train runs between Neral and Matheran in Maharashtra. It takes you through the gorgeous views of the Western ghats. It has been operating since 1907 and runs for a 140-hour journey covering two large zigzags on the way. As it cuts through the forest in the journey, you can get a whole new perspective on the world, cradled in the lap of nature. One of the most interesting parts of the journey is when it passes through a short tunnel called ‘the one kiss tunnel’.
