Mamata Bannerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, lost to Suvendu Adhikari in the most disputed area of Nandigram. There had been several controversies where Mamata Bannerjee had asked for a recounting. After these events, the High Court of Kolkata had declared Suvendu as the winner of the Nandigram seat. This led to the Bhawanipur bypoll to get Mamata Bannerjee a seat within the state. She has secured the seat in the Bhawanipur bypoll by a record margin of votes.

The election which was held on 30th September was extremely crucial. It was essential that Bannerjee enter the assembly within 6 months of accepting her post as the Chief minister. If she had failed in this election as well, the results would have been devastating for Trinamool Congress.

Victory Of Bannerjee At Bhawanipur Bypoll

After the victory of Mamata Bannerjee with a margin of almost 60,000 votes, the Election Commission has stated that there should be no kind of victory march or rally. This notice has been issued in light of the ongoing pandemic. Victory celebrations and processions have been banned to avoid any kind of post-poll violence as well. The acting Chief Justice of Calcutta had been urged by the police officials to take the necessary steps before the results of the Bhawanipur bypoll were declared to avoid any kind of violence that might happen against the ruling party.

The elections have been very crucial for the state. The campaigns which had taken up the slogans of “no vote to BJP” worked immensely in Bengal. The margin with which TMC gained victory this year has been unprecedented as well. With the victory of Mamata Bannerjee, TMC will be able to bring its legislative powers to proper use.
